For the implementation of the system of deposit of drinks in Latvia, the Ministry of Environment and Protection of the Environment presented to the State Chancellery a draft amendment of the law on packaging and nature protection, said Kaspars Rūklis, Minister of the Interior. In the presidential resolution, "the MEPRD continued to work on the alignment of deposit laws.The Ministry held a meeting and sent letters to the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. (LCCI) and the Latvian Traders' Association (LTA) to ask them to evaluate the draft laws prepared and submit proposals, objections or clarifications In cooperation with the LTA and the LCCP, the Ministry made corrections in accordance with the submitted proposals
On the basis of the entrusted tasks, the MoEEB also received proposals for modifications from the company " Coca Cola HBC ". Bills were completed with possible improvements and submitted to the Government for re-evaluation.
It was reported that the package consignment system provides for the possibility for residents to e recover the deposit fees paid for the package by transferring the packaging of used drinks to the container or to the tip. The benefits of the system include promoting waste sorting in households, offering a waste sorting option that is easily accessible and understandable for citizens. Taking into account the experience of Lithuania and Estonia, up to 90% of used packaging is returned and almost 100% of the packaging can be recycled.
