The Trump administration will officially launch a new fighter command dedicated to space next week.
Vice President Pence and Chief of Staff Chiefs General Joseph Dunford announced Tuesday at the National Council of Space meeting in Virginia that the US Space Command would be officially operational on Aug. 29.
The space command, which will be responsible for the planning and execution of space operations, will have 87 units to launch next week, Dunford said.
Their capabilities will include missile warning, satellite operations, space control and space support, Dunford said.
"This step will put us on the track to maintain a competitive edge, as Vice President Pence has described and as the president has described, in this crucial area of war," he said. he declares. "The direction is clear, we understand it and we leave."
In June, the Senate confirmed that General John Raymond was the commander of Space Command.
The creation of Space Command, the first new combatant command since US command in 2009, is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to reorganize the way the US military manages the space. US officials believe that the military must put more emphasis on space to compete with Russia and China.
The administration's efforts include continuing work to establish a new military branch called Space Force. New military branches must be approved by Congress.
Both the House and the Senate have included some kind of space military branch in their versions of the annual defense policy bill this year, thus making possible the creation of a new military service once both chambers have brought their bills closer together.
The creation of Space Command is considered an intermediate step on the way to the Space Force.
Dunford said Tuesday that a space force "will have a positive impact on our ability to grow the numbers and capabilities we will need in the future".
"I am convinced that the attention that one service will bring to space will have a profound difference," he added.
