U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert – who vowed to transport her Glock through Washington, DC, and was reprimanded by the city’s police chief for saying so – caused a minor incident during a security shutdown in the United States House of Representatives Tuesday night.
The Rifle Republican reportedly attempted to walk through newly installed metal detectors, which sounded like her. She then refused to hand over her bag to Capitol Police, who in turn refused to let her into the rooms of the House, according to reporters at the scene.
It is not known how the problem was resolved. Reporters saw Boebert enter the House to vote, but could not confirm whether she was allowed to pass with her bag. Boebert’s office did not respond to a request for comment answering this question.
Members of Congress are permitted to bear arms elsewhere in the Capitol complex, but not on the House and Senate floors. Boebert suggested on Twitter Tuesday that she had a gun with her that night.
“I am legally allowed to carry my gun in Washington, DC, and the Capitol complex,” Boebert said in a tweet about the incident. “The metal detectors outside the House would not have ended the violence we saw last week – this is just another political coup from President (Nancy) Pelosi.”
Boebert’s polite confrontation with police came less than a week after rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol, killing an officer. In the days that followed, the congresswoman repeatedly offered her condolences and thanks to the Capitol Police.
“Thank you to the brave men and women of our law enforcement community, especially the United States Capitol Police, who are protecting us,” she tweeted Tuesday afternoon, two hours before refusing. to comply with the orders of the officers.
