“I was considered an enemy.”
Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation is one of the best albums to date! But while this is a huge commercial and critical success, not to mention a staple for so many of us, Hill has never followed it up with another studio album.
Now she has explained why. “What’s wild is that no one on my label ever called me and asked me how can we help you make another album, EVER… EVER. Did I ever say? Never ! ” Hill said during The 500 best Rolling Stone albums Podcast.
“After Miseducation, there were dozens of sprawling obstructionists, politics, repressive agendas, unrealistic expectations and saboteurs EVERYWHERE, ”she added.
“People had included me in their own accounts of their success with my album, and if that contradicted my experience, I was seen as an enemy,” Hill continued.
After Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation released in 1998, it won 5 Grammys, including Album of the Year. Hill’s intention to create something his “musical ancestors and ancestors” would love was an absolute success.
Now she hears other artists sampling her music like Drake and Teyana Taylor in their songs.
“I challenged the standard and introduced a new standard,” she said. “I believe Miseducation does this and I believe I always do – defy convention when convention is questionable.
Hopefully someday we’ll have the chance to hear another studio album from Lauryn Hill. Either way, she will remain one of the best musical artists in history.
