Referring to Laverne’s podcast, Ellen noted an episode where there was a discussion of “ men dating trans people [and] wanting to stay in the closet on this.

‘So I guess this guy [you are dating] is not like that, ” said Ellen, to which Laverne replied, “ This guy [that I am dating] has never dated a trans woman before.

“ My last two boyfriends had never dated a trans woman before. And what’s interesting is that when you’re famous you want to [your partner] be really discreet, ”she explained.

“ But the problem over the years for me as a trans woman and other trans women is that the femininity of trans women is often disowned. A lot of people don’t see trans women as women.

“So, men who are attracted to women, people think they’re gay. And if you’re a straight man, you don’t want people to think you are gay.

“So most of the time they don’t want to divulge or let anyone know,” she explained.

Laverne, after recalling a personal anecdote, said the complexity of the situation is “really sad” because “people just don’t understand and just don’t understand.”

“I wish we had been in a different place, but we’re just not there yet. We need a probably famous and eloquent guy to be able to talk about it, ”she said.
