Lenovo has created a Nintendo Switch-style mini laptop that can transform into a handheld game console.
The prototype is called Lavie Mini and comes from a joint venture between Lenovo and NEC Corporation of Japan. The product looks like an old-school netbook with an 8 inch screen. However, it’s also a convertible laptop, which means you can turn it into a touchscreen tablet, thanks to a 360-degree hinge.
In tablet mode, you can connect an optional gamepad and turn the Lavie Mini into a portable console for PC gaming. “The controller comes with all the features you’d expect and in a familiar gaming setup, including immersive vibrations, left / right trigger buttons, and analog throttles,” Lenovo said.

Although the laptop is small, there is some power in the product. The prototype can be configured with the 11th generation Intel Core i7 mobile processor, which contains an integrated GPU via Iris Xe graphics. The hardware was also equipped with an infrared camera to activate Windows Hello, 16 GB of RAM, up to 256 GB of SSD storage, and a Wi-Fi 6 modem.
In addition, the Lavie Mini has a 1920 x 1200 WUXGA panel and an HDMI port. The product itself weighs 1.28 pounds, roughly double the weight of a Nintendo Switch without the Joy-Con controllers attached.
It is not known if the Lavie Mini will ever become a real product. But we expect the company to show it off at CES next week. Stay tuned for our coverage.
