Perps of the world, you are warned: Law and orderElliot Stabler is back at work.
The detective, long played SVU star Chris Meloni, returning in a crossover event on Thursday that ended with the premiere of his new spin-off, Law and order: organized crime. In a moment we will want to hear what you thought OCfirst episode of. But first, a quick recap of the time. (And if you want to read a recap of the SVU ep which preceded it, let’s go!)
We start with Stabler who was scolded for speaking directly to the bad guys in the courthouse, which could have greatly compromised the case. He maintains that he is simply trying to end the bombing that killed Kathy, “for my children.” Then he meets Liv in a sleigh area where Noah is having fun; she gives El some notes on the case, just in case he gets bounced off it. They talk about his life in Italy, and it’s light and friendly until he mentions how much she would have loved where he lived. “I can’t,” she said grimly. “I understand,” he said sadly. Then he mentions that he was asked to give a speech at his awards show, but that he’s not a fan of public speaking. However, “I wrote this,” he said, handing her a letter, “and I was going to give it to you that evening.” MY HEART. Noah calls, and she turns to leave. Stabler looks at them with nostalgia.
We are drawn into Stabler’s work with the intelligence unit, which involves a raid on a warehouse that unearths forged documents, including a duplicate of Stabler’s Italian ID card. The warehouse also contained a hookah joint operated by a man who was murdered; his mother, Angela Wheatley, math teacher (played by Bones‘Tamara Taylor) is not interested in participating in the survey.
The Stablers all meet to discuss the funeral; this is the first time in the crossover that we see Eli, Maureen and Lizzie. It seems Kathy felt like Elliot wasn’t working on dangerous files while they were living overseas. There also appears to be some dissension over El’s announcement that he will not be returning to Rome. At the funeral service, which Olivia attends, Eli kneels in front of his mother’s grave and sobs. Stabler stands next to his youngest son and holds him in his arms, reassuring him: “I have you.
OK, back to the case. Stabler briefly meets a gangster recently released from prison named Sinatra (played by Chaz Palminteri), who owned the warehouse in question. Stabler asks if he’s the one behind the bombing. “If I wanted you dead,” said the old man, “you’d be the one in the ground right now.”
Then we follow Sinatra to her son’s house. Richard (american horror story‘s Dylan McDermott) is a rich guy with arrogant tastes who ran the club in the warehouse while his dad was in the ring, and now Sinatra is angry that the police are sniffing. Richard is also doing something in Puglia, Italy. I’m not going to lie – I’m not 100% sure what’s going on here, but I guess we’ll get more as the season goes on.
Back in the clean and pretty part of the NYPD (no filthy squad rooms here!), Stabler is happy to hear that the department is opening a task force on the bombing / warehouse situation. But, much to his regret, he is not going to execute it. This honor goes to Ayanna Bell (Deputy‘s Danielle Moné Truitt), who gives Stabler’s old school a serious eye. She gives us more details about Sinatra’s son, who opened one of the first online pharmacies and is involved in illegal drugs. Oh, and Richard’s last name is Wheatley: he was married to the professor at one point and took his name, mostly to tick off his father. When they divorced, two of their sons went to live with him; the other, the one who ran the hookah lounge, chose to live with it.
Stabler and Angela are discussing all this when he notices a guy on a moped acting like a squirrel. Soon they are attacked. The biker and an accomplice attempt a drive-by shootout; Elliot pushes the professor aside and it’s okay, but it’s close.
The next day, Stabler admits he doesn’t know if the blow was on him or on Angela. Bell reminds him that during their search can dragging the people who killed Kathy is not their primary directive: “Our responsibility is to bring down an international drug cartel that has skated under the radar for two decades. Stabler says he understands … then immediately pulls her aside when he receives an encrypted message summoning him to the Coney Island Wonder Wheel at 9 a.m. that night to get information about Kathy’s murder.
But while Stabler is on his way, Richard finds his father at the Wonder Wheel and hints that he knows Sinatra intended to sell him to the cops. As they ride the giant Ferris wheel, it stops with their car at the top. Longtime racist Sinatra apologizes for all the terrible things he has said about his mixed-race grandchildren. But Richard doesn’t have it. And the moment Stabler arrives, he finds Sinatra with a bullet in the forehead. He therefore opens the dead man’s eyes large enough to be able to unlock his phone using facial recognition, then pockets the device. Same old Stabler!
Back at Richard’s, guess who’s there: Angela! She picks him up for the drive-by (“I told you I could take care of it”) and it’s clear that they’re not as far apart as she led Stabler to believe. And THEN, although we’ve already had a close range murder in this hour, the ABSOLUTE POSSIBLE thing is happening. As Stabler makes an anonymous call about the corpse and nervously walks back into (what I think is) his apartment building, Liv is there. And she has the LETTER in her HAND. She wants to talk about it, but he’s sweaty and choppy and when Bell calls, he blows Liv and rushes upstairs. Nooooooooooooo!
