Lawrence North’s Class 2022 guard CJ Gunn announced his engagement in Indiana less than two months ago.
At the time, Gunn thought he would play for Archie Miller at Bloomington, but the Hoosiers opted to make a change of coach after a disappointing 12-15 season.
Rather than reopen recruiting, Gunn chose to remain patient and wait and see who Indiana hired before making a decision. News broke on Sunday that the Hoosiers were hiring Mike Woodson, a native of Indianapolis and former UI player, to replace Miller.
It didn’t take long for Woodson after his introductory press conference Monday to start building a relationship with Gunn and his family. On Tuesday, Woodson spoke individually with Gunn’s father, Christopher, his mother, Linda as well as CJ himself.
“They were very, very quick and brief introductory calls that we’ve all had,” said Christopher Gunn. “We went around the three in the evening. Linda, myself and CJ and we kind of all heard the same thing and of course communicated the same.
Christopher Gunn said the family let Woodson know they are still engaged in Indiana.
“When on the call with me, I was only listening and wanted to make sure that there was still a strong interest in CJ and that there was at least a high level plan for him to be. integrates into what Coach Woodson is building, ”said Christopher Gunn. “We have people in common, so the trust factor for me is pretty high (with Coach Woodson). He talked about his commitment to CJ and wanting him to be part of the blueprint of what he’s building, I told him it was awesome and let him know that we remain committed to you too.
Gunn, a 6-foot-5 guard, is the No. 107 player nationally according to the 247Composite and a four-star prospect.
On Saturday, Gunn and Lawrence North will play against Carmel for the Class 4A State Championship in Indianapolis. Christopher Gunn said Woodson had a simple message for his son regarding Saturday’s game.
“The coach and CJ talked and got to know each other a bit,” said Christopher Gunn. “CJ said Coach Woodson told him to kick (beep) on Saturday.”
Gunn, who also received offers from Cincinnati, Xavier, Kansas State and Missouri, is averaging 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game for Lawrence North. He shoots almost 38% behind the 3-point line.
