Lawyer embezzled money from 737 MAX victims

It’s not often that my love for flying and my (old?) Interest in reality TV intersect, but it’s one of those rare situations, even if the circumstances are dire.

Lawyer allegedly embezzled money from Boeing settlement

Tom Girardi of the law firm Girardi Keese, and his wife, Erika Girardi of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”, are accused of embezzling settlement funds intended for victims of the Lion Air 610. It was the Boeing flight 737 MAX from October 2018 which crashed, killing 189 people.

According to the lawsuit, instead of paying customers the settlement money the company received from Boeing in the spring of 2020, Girardi instead diverted the proceeds to avoid a “downward spiral of rising debt and falling funds.” The lawsuit alleges that this money is used to finance their “scandalous lifestyles”.

The lawsuit was filed by the Edelson law firm, which acted as local counsel in the case. In recent months, Edelson has come to realize that full payments have not been made to the crash victims, even though Boeing had transferred all settlement funds to Girardi.

Instead, Girardi reportedly made deals to redirect the money to the creditors of the law firm, from which Girardi borrowed millions of dollars. He also claimed that these creditors “knowingly requested and received embezzled funds belonging to Lion Air customers”.

It all comes shortly after the news of Erika Girardi, 49, and Tom Girardi, 81, after being married for 21 years, was announced. Edelson also claims the divorce is a “sham attempt” to protect the couple’s money from creditors.

This is also why I am widely on reality TV

It’s not often that there is a context in which I can write on reality TV, but it is an exception.

The truth is, I’m basically on “Real Housewives” franchises. At the time, I thought they were entertaining because it actually seemed like we got a glimpse into people’s lives.

Sadly at this point most franchises have gotten so much more bogus that I can’t look at them anymore. The number of people on these shows who go bankrupt or go to jail, all to keep up appearances, is simply incredible. If I wanted a show about locked up people, I would watch “Love After Lockup” (and I watch that, for the record).

Take, for example, “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”. You’ve got Erika Girardi’s losing musical ‘career’ (perhaps indirectly funded on the backs of the 737 MAX crash victims), you’ve got Dorit’s fake accent, and it’s not even aimed at her husband, who seems to be in a worse financial situation than Norwegian Air, despite their ridiculous lifestyle.

Speaking of Erika, I love how on the show she talks about how she has two private jets that she flies all over the place. Funny, because I sat across from her on an American Airlines flight a few years ago (with her “glam squad” that she takes everywhere)… I guess her two planes were in maintenance that day ?

Now, to be clear, I’m not totally into reality TV. I always enjoy healthy shows like “Love After Lockup”, “90 Day Fiance” and “Family Chantel” (which I’m sad to admit, because I feel like I get dumber every time watch this show). Primarily, I just watch crime shows, to the point that I basically consider myself qualified to be a criminal investigator (in the same way WebMD turns us all into doctors).

Conclusion

A new trial alleges that a lawyer representing the victims of the 737 MAX crash misappropriated funds intended for the families of the victims of the crash. Not only that, but the lawyer being sued is Tom Girardi and his wife Erika Girardi, from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”. It happens just as he and his wife are divorcing.
