OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Pernell McPhee's career in the NFL is over.
McPhee, who was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, returns to the team for a one-year contract, a league official told Adam Schefter on Thursday. # 39; ESPN.
The Ravens brought McPhee back because they needed a veteran smuggler, and in particular someone who can make a pass to the center after losing Terrell Suggs and Za 's Darius Smith on the loose. Baltimore had already shown interest in Justin Houston and Ezekiel Ansah during the off season.
McPhee, 30, played his first four seasons with the Ravens before leaving the team in 2015 to sign a five-year contract with the Chicago Bears as a free agent. In 2017, McPhee acknowledged that it hurt him to not receive Baltimore's offer to stay when he was released.

When McPhee left, the Ravens instructed Smith to replace him specifically. When Smith signed with the Green Bay Packers in March, Baltimore then replaced him with McPhee.
Sustainability has been a major problem with McPhee. In four seasons since leaving Baltimore, McPhee has missed more games (15) than registered bags (14).
He played only three seasons in Chicago before his release last February. He missed 12 games with a variety of ailments, including chronic knee problems, during his time with the Bears. He was placed on the injured list in December 2017, his last in Chicago, after trying to hurt his shoulder.
Last year, McPhee had 11 tackles and no sacks in 13 games for the Washington Redskins.
Ravens will likely use McPhee as part of an accelerated rotation. Baltimore has used a third-round pick against Jaylon Ferguson, the all-time NCAA leader, and hopes that disappointing third-year players Tyus Bowser and Tim Williams will continue to produce.
