Larry Mitchell Hopkins, the 69-year-old United Constitutional Patriots leader, was treated for life-threatening injuries after the alleged battery this week at the Doña Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces, according to a report. county press release.
"He was attacked by other inmates," said Kelly Jameson, spokeswoman for Doña Ana County. "We are still conducting an investigation, but it is possible that three other detainees are involved."
She had no more details about the alleged battery.
Hopkins – also known as Johnny Horton Jr. – was banned from owning firearms or ammunition because he had been convicted of at least three crimes, including the # 39; usurpation of the identity of a peace officer in Oregon in 2006, according to the complaint.
The alleged battery would have occurred shortly after 21 hours. Monday, a few hours after Hopkins was indicted, officials said. Hopkins was transferred out of the Doña Ana County Detention Center under the direction of the US Marshals Service on Tuesday, the statement said.
Hopkins' attorney, Kelly O. Connell, told CNN that he did not have the details of what had happened and did not know how his client was doing or where he was currently being held.
"Mr. Hopkins was beaten and beaten by fellow inmates," wrote O. Connell in a letter to prison officials requesting recordings, reports and videos about the incident.
"The case of Mr. Hopkins is certainly highly publicized and he has gained a controversial reputation because of his border activities," wrote O. Connell. "Moreover, there is undoubtedly a lot of resentment and even fury against him in some inmates because of the way he was portrayed in the media and his general coverage."
"So, I have to ask, was all care taken to ensure that Mr. Hopkins was an important man?" the letter said.
