“It’s a very polarizing situation,” League City Police Chief Gary Ratliff said. “Where some people don’t believe there should be masks and others do.”
Police say James Schulz, 53, entered the restaurant on Wednesday evening without a face mask. He was asked to wear one to be served or to use the drive-thru.
The customer “belligerently refused,” Ratliff said, and accused restaurant staff of not wanting to serve him because he was homeless.
Schulz then walked to the door and, with the manager’s back to him, he allegedly ran behind the manager, tackled him and stabbed him several times in the arm and upper torso with what appeared to be a pocket knife, according to Ratliff.
Several colleagues ran to the manager’s aid and Schulz fled the restaurant on his bicycle. The director was taken to a local hospital with three stab wounds, treated and released.
Police are still looking for Schulz and describe him as a passenger living in the area.
Ratliff said people should follow local business mask policies.
“A lot of these people have had some of these events, I don’t know this manager, but have had personal events with loved ones who have passed away and died as a result of Covid, like some of our officers,” Ratliff mentioned. “All I would ask is that people respect the opinions and policies of these companies.”
“You can refuse to do business in these places, or whatever you choose to do, but there is no reason to resort to aggressive behavior like this,” he added.
