Riot Games was recently introduced League of Legends players to the new champion of the game: Gwen, a doll who fights with a pair of giant spectral scissors. While some fans are excited about her inclusion, she has also started a debate within the community as to whether or not Gwen could be as well attractive. Having characters considered too hot might seem like an odd concern to anyone, but the discussions have to do with Riot’s design trends over time.
When it comes to gameplay, Gwen seems pretty standard for a modern upper lane champion. She has powerful scissor attacks and can move quickly. Traditionally, it’s more complicated – Gwen was sewn by Isolde, a queen, who later died in a botched assassination. Isolde’s husband Viego tried to bring her back with a ritual, but things went horribly wrong. The Shadow Isles, full of ghosts and ghouls were created, and part of Isolde entered Gwen and animated the doll.
Some fans believe Riot didn’t go far enough to make Gwen feel unique on such a big list. She has a few subtle dot marks on her arms and neck, and her expressions are quite weird since she is not used to doing them. But other than that, she looks like a pretty slim young lady. Sure, it’s a doll, but in gangster parlance – not an evolved toy designed for kids. With over 140 champions on the League list, many of whom are young and thin women, Gwen’s big distinction is her fancy hair and big scissors.
Artists in the community have made suggestions on what a new, more doll-like Gwen might look like, using the original as inspiration.
The Gwen controversy is part of a larger rebuke than part of the League fanbase has been breastfeeding for some time – all the recent champion is a total hottie. Viego, the aforementioned grief-stricken king, wears an open jacket that shows off his pristine abs. Swain, the leader of the Noxian Empire, was reworked in 2018 that gave him killer cheekbones and jawbone. Rell, a tortured teenager who was sent to Hogwarts for war crimes, doesn’t look like a traumatized 16-year-old. Everyone is strangely attractive, as the world of Runeterra is the set of Riverdale.
Ryan “Reav3” Mireles, Senior Champion Producer on League of Legends, dropped by Reddit to share a few design ideas related to Gwen, apparently in response to some of that discussion and criticism. According to Mireles, Gwen was designed to be more human in order to set her apart from other cast members.
“We talked about it a LOT internally and we had a few early versions where it was more [an] animated doll, ”he wrote in a thread. “The main reason we switched to the transformed doll approach was to separate her more from Shaco, as well as Orianna. So rather than having 2 animated dolls and an automaton, we have an automaton, and an animated doll and a transformed doll (like Pinocchio.) ”
According to Mireles, Riot is aware of fan demand for more mundane and monstrous champions. In a comment, he wrote: “As we move on to doing less straight humans, (although that doesn’t mean less humanoids, it just means we want to do more things like Renekton / Aatrox / Lillia like in humanoids) the effects of this change won’t really be seen until 2022, as the timelines for champions are so long. And that doesn’t mean we don’t want to make creatures anymore, we do, it doesn’t mean that we plan to suddenly create tons of creatures, just less pure humans.
More details on Gwen, including the specifics of her kit, are to come. Although it is still being tested, it is unlikely that Riot will make any major changes to its design.
