Riot claims that 9% of gamers worldwide “engage in consistent AFK behavior.”

Riot Games outlined the changes they hope will improve player behavior when it comes to slowing down or quitting early in League of Legends.

“We know AFKs and leavers are some of the most disruptive behaviors you face, so we’re happy to bring you an update on AFK and Leaver punishments today.” BarackProbama and TimTamMonster wrote on the game’s official website blog.

Bringing together both inactive ‘AFK’ behavior and intentional abandonments into one nuisance, the pair said the team were introducing a number of new ‘points’ to deal with the issue, including new penalty ‘levels’. and a way to “protect” players. repeat offenders.

“So far we have penalized AFKing with delays in the queue,” the blog explains. “Delays in the queue are a speed bump on a player’s path to their next matches: by clicking the play button, the queue blocks them behind a short timer. The purpose of this is to change behavior.

“For most people, queuing delays work well, but around 9% of our players globally exhibit consistent AFK behavior and don’t seem to be put off by a few delays between their matches.”

Going forward, there will now be a new penalty: queue blocks. When a player experiences a queue lock, “a pop-up will appear explaining their punishment and will not be able to start games in the MOBA queues.”

“When we issue a queue lock, we don’t say, ‘Hey, isn’t that boring your time? “”, adds the blog. “We are removing the player from the population for a period of time so that they cannot continue to AFK in games. Once a queue lock expires, it is followed by the queue delay of max level so we can always retain the benefits of behavior modification and players who take a break cannot sit all their punishment. Queue blocks apply to all MOBA queues .

“As the deployment proceeds, we are committed to continuing to monitor AFKs, both with respect to the frequency of this behavior and region-specific connectivity issues,” the team concluded, adding that ‘she wanted to make sure it was “fair in all areas that may experience different levels of connectivity”. As a result, the new penalties initially only arrive in a few selected regions before expanding globally.

ICYMI, Arcane – the animated League of Legends spinoff series – debuts on Netflix this Fall / Q3. While this is the first show focused on League of Legends, it is the last of many Netflix video game adaptations.

Interestingly, the streaming service describes it as an “event series,” which suggests it won’t work for several seasons like Castlevania.
