If there’s one Apple product that needs a new coat of paint, it’s the iMac. Last revamped centuries ago (in 2012), the all-in-one desktop machine currently sports one of Apple’s oldest product models. But a new savage leak has revealed that the iMac could get a very colorful upgrade in 2021.
Not only will the iMac 2021 feature an all-new design, it’ll also come in five new shades. And judging by the new 3D renderings in the lineup (below), our best computer for graphic design is about to look like a parcel more dynamic.
Everyone’s favorite Apple leaker, Jon Prosser, says the 2021 iMac will be available in black, white, green, blue, and rose gold. Recent rumors suggest that the new iMac will feature thinner bezels and a slimmer overall body (similar to Apple’s.
) and Prosser’s renderings depict a straighter and narrower profile. So these colors. The most obvious thing to note about the pastel hues is that they come straight from the iPad Air 2020. The move suggests that Apple is considering consolidating its product color lines (although if so, it does. odd that the company did not choose to release the iPhone 12 in the same muted tones).
But as many fans have pointed out, the colorful iMacs could also serve as a nostalgic throwback to the very first iMac. Back in the days when Apple’s aesthetic was a lot more fun than the metallic silver-gray festival it is today (the Apple logo was rainbow, remember), it pulled out machines in all kinds of charming colors. Looking at these iMac 2021 renderings, we can’t help but think of the 1998 iMac G3 (below).
And judging from the response on Twitter (below), it looks like fans are ready to see Apple inject some color back into the iMac lineup. Indeed, with some corners of the internet getting more and more tired of minimal graphic design, could the sentiment spill over into product design as well?
Wow, I love how the leaked renderings of the iMac 2021 look like. In the same colors as the iPad Air. Wonderful design work. Photos courtesy of @jon_prosser #imac #apple pic.twitter.com/p8ZfC2zCNwFebruary 24, 2021
Colorful IMacs 😤😤😤 good news: iPad Air and iMac now share the same colors. Hope they bring this to the MacBook Air line as well. pic.twitter.com/wCTTywwuuKFebruary 24, 2021
Rumors that the next iMac will be available in different colors, but look nothing like these, leaves me disappointed and my wallet relieved. #apple #imac pic.twitter.com/GP1X3AZ8OSFebruary 24, 2021
If we’re being honest, while this is certainly a dynamic new look, the redesign is also a bit predictable. Other than the new colors, which come entirely from another product, the iMac doesn’t look much different.
That said, anything that makes the iMac a little more exciting is a winner in our book. While its internals are impressive, we were disappointed with the very (very) familiar design of the iMac 2020.
And speaking of internals, the new iMac is expected to get the same incredible M1 chip as the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. We were blown away by the performance of M1 and were surprised to see some MacBook M1 offerings hitting the web so soon after their release last November.
With the rumor that Apple is hosting an event next month, we might see the new colorful iMac sooner rather than later. But if you’d rather not wait, there are plenty of amazing Mac options out there and now – especially with M1.
