The day before yesterday, many may have spent the day anxiously awaiting the PS More August 2021 free games will be revealed later this month. Technically speaking, August 2021 is already a bit of an exception, as Sony has confirmed the free PS5 PS Plus game for August 2021 as Hunter’s Arena: Legends during its last inventory.
However, a recent and super reliable leak has revealed the other two PS4 games. While Sony generally strives to vary each month, and August is no exception, it’s easy to see why many fans’ reaction to the PS Plus leak isn’t exactly a happy one. Unless Sony changes something by the end of the month (an unlikely event), with both games joining Hunter’s Arena: Legends are Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Tennis world tour 2.

All rumors and leaks live or die depending on their source, but this leak has the most reliable source there is: Sony itself. It looks like the PS Plus games were released by Sony on their website just long enough for people to hear about them before they were taken down. As such, the three aforementioned games are more than likely legitimate. Hunter’s Arena: Legends is a battle royale game with a PvE element, inspired by ancient Asia. The background reveals that a Hunter is the one who unleashed chaos in the world, setting up all the events of the game. Overall, this is a different take on the standard battle royale formula, although it should be noted that she has had mixed reviews on Steam.
Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, on the other hand, is one of those games that people love or hate with a Metascore of 77 but a User Score of 5.6 on PS4. Like the other Garden War PvZ spin off, Battle for Neighborville is a third person shooter game where players are either plants or zombies in a cooperative or comp MP game mode. There are 23 classes between plants and zombies, a new team play class, PvE zones and more. Local split-screen multiplayer is also available for all modes, which may grab the attention of many co-op fans. On the other end of the spectrum, however, the premise alone may not appeal to everyone. It’s not a bad PS Plus game, but it’s one that is varied and based on fan reception. Paired with other games, it would fit perfectly.
Almost upside down for Battle for Neighborville, Tennis World Tour 2 has a metascore of 56 and a user score of 7.5 on PS4. In it, players can compete against each other online, play in a career mode, enjoy virtual tennis matches, etc., but what many point out on both sides of the score is that it is a game of tennis, clear and simple. A lack of innovation is often cited in reference to the game, thus limiting its appeal even to those who would love a good game of tennis (excluding Nintendo’s Mario, of course).
But many PS Plus fans aren’t happy with August 2021 free games
Generally, variety is a good thing for PS Plus, as many users can usually find at least one game that they haven’t played that catches their eye. For example, the free PS Plus games for July include A story of plague: innocence (PS5), Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and WWE 2K Battlegrounds. Fans (at least those with a PS5) of single player games have a solid offer to play (one with an upcoming sequel), a chance to review Black Ops 4 before the new Cod drops, and a WWE game that might appeal to those who skipped it. There is a different draw in each game, and an approach that is broad enough that most people download at least one of these games.
Where many are upset is that there isn’t a single game that’s quite so appealing, according to this leak. Hunter’s Arena: Legends enters an already oversaturated battle royale market, and it’s unlikely to pull fans away from Fortnite, Apex Legends, or War zone. Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville isn’t a bad game, but those who love it have probably played it already. Fair or Not, this is the type of game many choose based on coverage. Then, Tennis world tour 2 only appeals to tennis fans, which some players probably are, but not in general.
Along with the lack of appeal comes high expectations for PS Plus as well. There hasn’t been a reaction like this to the reveal since May 2020, which has gone as far as a petition to change the games. Many are upset because there is nothing really striking about the selection, and PS Plus has had a streak of success since then as well. Maybe not every month attracted everyone, but many, many of them probably did more than the current month.
There are, however, two bright spots that fans should keep in mind. First, it might be the “worst” month since May 2020, but it’s a lot of good times on PS Plus. It won’t always get the biggest and best games on the market, and Sony has trusted its fanbase enough that those who are upset should keep in mind what else they got from the service. This year. PS Plus not only offered more games this year, but the 2021 PS Plus games were more valuable than the whole of 2020. Second, this is only a month-long leak, even s ‘this is unlikely to change. Echoes of non-content can turn into a more appropriate uproar when games are properly advertised, but games won’t be on offer beyond August. September will bring new games and more choices for gamers.
Overall, as paid subscribers, it’s understandable that many are unhappy with the PS Plus offerings. However, this is only a small bump on an otherwise well-paved road.
