The iPhone 13 could benefit from a significant camera upgrade for all four expected models. However, we’re not sure if that means the front notch will shrink.
A claim from DigiTimes indicates that we can expect more time-of-flight (ToF) sensors on the iPhone 13, thanks to a new chipmaker working with Apple. The report says the sensors will enable “instant immersive AR experiences.” Augmented reality has failed to take off with the masses, but the iPhone 13 could change that.
ToF sensors are also a big help when taking low-light photos and capturing portraits, so it’s good news that Apple will continue to use them and possibly add them to more phones.
The DigiTimes report itself is very business-oriented. The short bulletin reveals that II-VI, an American company, is about to start manufacturing VCSEL chips for Apple’s ToF cameras. The source DigiTimes spoke to claimed that these chips will be built into a 2021 iPhone to enhance the AR capabilities of the next-gen device, as well as others made by companies with existing Apple contracts.
What this means for iPhone users is that the LiDAR sensor that debuted on the iPhone 12 Pro is sure to return to the iPhone 13. There is some question as to whether Apple will bring it as well. to the base iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, or leave it as a feature reserved for Pro models. DigiTimes writes “some of Apple’s next generation iPhones” discussing its source’s claims, which sounds boring as the latest situation is.
The claim for a smaller notch, unlike other reports, is not made by DigiTimes, but is a suggestion from GizChina, an outlet that covered the story early on. That’s a reasonable guess to make, as we’ve seen suggestions of a shrunken notch since the lead-up to the iPhone 11’s launch, plus new components could mean Apple may rethink Face ID and Face ID. camera hardware to make the notch take up less space. However, this idea is by no means confirmed by the report in question.
We also have LTPO display technology to look forward to on the next iPhone. This recent rumor says that we can expect that the same technology used on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s display will also be used on the iPhone 13. This will not only allow it to use a 120Hz refresh rate. For the first time on an iPhone, it’ll also allow it to vary its refresh rate dynamically to preserve battery life.
All of these upgrades will be essential for the iPhone 13 to take on the Galaxy S21 and other new phones coming out next year. But since the next iPhone isn’t due until next September, there’s still a long time to go before we can be sure that this and the other recent leaks are correct.
