Apple is stepping up its efforts to tackle the leaks and the employees who are responsible for them. In a note which was disclosed to Edge, Cook says Apple is doing “everything in our power to identify” internal leakers, and added that “people who disclose confidential information have no place here.”
The note was sent to employees on Tuesday night, and it comes after details of an Apple general meeting were leaked on Friday. In the note, Cook said he heard that many employees were “incredibly frustrated to see the content of the meeting leaked to reporters.”
While Cook’s memo comes after the meeting details were leaked, it also extends to product leaks. Cook acknowledges that a number of details regarding the iPhone 13 and other Apple announcements were leaked ahead of Apple’s event in September.
Cook says Apple is doing “everything in our power” to track down those responsible for the media leaks:
I’m writing today because I’ve heard that many of you are incredibly frustrated to see the meeting content leaked to reporters. This comes after a product launch in which most of the details of our announcements were also leaked to the press.
I want you to know that I share your frustration. These opportunities to connect as a team are really important. But they only work if we can be confident that the content will stay within Apple. I want to reassure you that we are doing everything in our power to identify those who fled. As you know, we do not tolerate the disclosure of confidential information, whether it is the intellectual property of a product or the details of a confidential meeting. We know that the leakers are a small number of people. We also know that people who divulge confidential information have no place here.
The full memo can be read at Edge. Notably, however, this isn’t the first time that Cook has promised to double Apple’s culture of secrecy. Whether or not the company succeeds this time around remains to be seen.
