According to the Wall Street Journal, the MTA in New York is considering a public service announcement that would ask subway users not to remove the Apple AirPods when going up or down the subway.

In the report, The Wall Street Journal quoted MTA maintenance supervisor Steven Dluginski as saying the MTA was using a "selection system" to save the lost AirPods. But, given the heat of summer and increased sweating, Mr. Dluginski said he noticed a slight increase in the number of AirPods fallen on the runways.

The Journal said that this summer was the "worst" rescue of AirPod rescues and that during a single summer, Thursday, at noon, the Dluginski team had to recover six. It is risky for employees who have to try to recover them and can cause delays in trains.

It's also dangerous for runners who might try to save themselves AirPods. In July, a rider named Ashley Mayer went viral on Twitter after recovering a misplaced AirPod on the rails using tape at the end of a pole.

The Apple AirPods have gained tremendous popularity in recent years for their ease of use, good sound quality and, now, their iconic look.
