In a statement, the organization expressed gratitude to Kuwait for its $ 1 million contribution to the fight against cancer in Syria, which immediately influenced the health situation of vulnerable families in Syria.
Ambbadador Jamal Al-Ghunaim, Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations and International Organizations, told KUNA that Kuwait is proactively funding WHO's programs to vaccinate Syrian children against HIV / AIDS. polio, as well as health care programs in Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan.
Al-Ghunaim said that the upcoming visit of Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, would open new horizons for cooperation between Kuwait and international health care organizations.
The evaluation of cancer services conducted by WHO in eight hospitals in several Syrian governorates in 2016 revealed a marked decrease in equipment, staff and care related to cancer.
Thanks to the donation from Kuwait, WHO obtained drugs and oncology equipment distributed in Syria's main hospitals.
"WHO has been working with oncology units of public reference hospitals in Syria to develop a list of high-value, specific anti-cancer drugs," said Elizabeth Hoff, WHO Representative in Syria. .
