لا يحتاج المنتخبان الإنجليزي والسويدي للتنويه بأهمية هذه المواجهة في ربع نهائي كأس العالم FIFA والذي تستضيفة مدينة سامارا بتاريخ 7 يوليو / تموز. وبغض النظر عن هوية المنتخب الذي يتأهل, ستكون نتيجة المباراة غير مسبوقة بما أن طرفيها فشلا في الماضي القريب بتجاوز هذه العتبة.
بالنسبة إلى المنتخب السويدي, فإنه في حال تجاوز ربع النهائي, ستكون هذه المرة الأولى منذ نسخة الولايات المتحدة 1994 التي يبلغ فيها المربع الذهبي, عندما حل الفريق في المركز الثالث. أما الإنجليز فيعود الظهور الأحدث لهم في نصف النهائي إلى إيطاليا 1990 عندما حلوا في المركز الرابع.
تتجه السويد إلى اللقاء بعد فوز مستحق بهدف يتيم على سويسرا بفضل هدف إيميل فورسبرج من كرة اصطدمت بقدم مدافع سويسري ودخلت المرمى. أما الإنجليز فقد نجحوا بتجاوز حاجز معنوي عندما تغلبوا بركلات الترجيح على كولومبيا بنتيجة 03.04 بعد أن انتهى الوقت الأصلي والإضافي للقاء بالتعادل بهدف لمثله, لتكون هذه هي المرة الأولى من أربع محاولات التي يفوز بها الأسود الثلاثة من الضربات الثابتة.
