American scientists have created a revolutionary device that allows paralyzed people to use their thoughts to perform tasks they never thought they could perform again.
BrainGate has demonstrated its ability to help people with paralysis in the past, but new research shows that the device can be connected to a tablet to send text messages, display weather forecasts and even operate a digital piano .
Volunteers with severe paralysis had to implant an aspirin-sized disc in their brains to be able to use a tablet.
The study was conducted by scientists from Brown University, Providence Medical Center, Mbadachusetts General Hospital, and Stanford University. It was published last week in PLOS ONE.
Three people with quadriplegia participated in the experiment, which included a small sensor placed in the cerebral cortex.
The chip is equipped with 100 electrodes that send signals to a computer.
The computer is equipped to detect certain patterns of activity, such as specific task ideas, and then translate those actions into commands executed on the Tablet PC.
The Google Nexus 9 tablet has also been used in the study and all its accessibility features have been disabled. Each order was sent to the tablet via a Bluetooth connection for business purposes, such as a wireless mouse.
Participants were able to use e-mail, chat apps, share popular videos, check weather, watch videos on YouTube, and shop online.
With the help of the brain slice, participants can perform up to 22 selections in one click per minute in various applications.
For text applications such as Google Hangouts and text messages, users can enter up to 30 characters per minute.
