MANCHESTER (Reuters) – Manchester United coach Alexis Sanchez will not play again this year and will face a long absence after a serious back thigh injury during training, said Friday. Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho.

The Chilean striker did not have an x-ray to determine the severity of the injury, but Mourinho described the intervention as a "serious muscle injury" that prompted the 29-year-old to cry in pain.

"He has not yet undergone radiography, but the player has experience and knows the size of the injury," Mourinho said at a press conference before traveling to Southampton Saturday.

"From my experience too, because of the scream of pain and the way the injury occurred, I expect to be away for a long time."

Mourinho said Sanchez's injury was more serious than that of defenseman Victor Lindelov in the thigh muscles ahead of Crystal Palace on Saturday, which should keep Swedes away from matches until Christmas.

"It does not look like a minor muscle injury that requires treatment for a week or ten days, and for me and Sanchez, we think that the degree of infection even before undergoing radiation therapy is different from that of Viktor Lindelov . "

"I think Alexis is suffering from a serious muscle injury, I do not want to take the risk and limit his time," he said.

Sanchez has struggled with United this season and has scored a goal in 12 games in all competitions so far.

Sanchez took the lead in two Premier League appearances this month against Manchester City and Crystal Palace, his last appearance in the starting lineup for Juventus' win in the Champions League on Nov. 7.

He missed the team that beat the Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday.

United is seventh in the league with 21 points in 13 games before tomorrow's game.

UK media reported Thursday that United had exercised the right to extend the survival of goalkeeper David Deja for another year as negotiations continued to reach an agreement.

The contract of the Spanish international was to expire at the end of the season, which would allow him to negotiate his transfer to an outside club from 1 January.

Mourinho, the 28-year-old United coach, has qualified as the world's best goalkeeper after saving an incredible opportunity that allowed England to qualify for the Champions League on Tuesday.

After a 1-0 win at the Young Boys at Old Trafford in Group H, Mourinho stressed that it was important for United's ambition to keep the Spanish goalkeeper badociated with the move to Paris St Germain.

"He is the best goalkeeper in the world," Mourinho told reporters after an extraordinary rescue showing the importance of the Spanish goalkeeper. "Our ambition is to have the best in the world and to keep it.

"… I know that he wants to stay and I know that his agent (Georgi Mendez) is satisfied with what the player wants and I also know that management wants to continue and work on it, so I hope solve the problem."
