Mark Hughes
LONDON (Reuters) – Southampton midfielder Mark Hughes was sacked Monday after the team found themselves in the relegation zone with only one win this season.
Hughes joined his former club in March with a short contract and helped the team avoid relegation last season by finishing 17th.
The Welsh signed a three-year contract in May but was unable to develop the team this season.
"Southampton confirms today that he has ended his badociation with the team's first coach, Mark Hughes," the club said in a statement.
Southampton is in 18th place, lost seven times in 14 games and lost 2-0 to a 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Saturday.
His only win of the season was against Crystal Palace in September.
Deputy coach Kelvin Davis will lead the team against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday at Wembley.
