Hazenhotel, 51, has been without a club since leaving Leipzig in May after two seasons, leading him to second place in the Bundesliga (2016-2017).
"The coaching change allows us to make a fresh start," said Southampton president Ralf Kruger. "Ralph has quickly become the ideal candidate for us."
"As a coach, Haznhotel demonstrates his pbadion, ability to communicate and his appetite for the further development we are looking for in Southampton," he said. "The pbadion for a new position is a major challenge in the Premier League and was apparent" at the new coach.
Coach Kelvin Davis will lead the team against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Wednesday in the English Premier League before Hazenhotel plays his first official match against Cardiff on Saturday.
