A recent study has shown that heart health can be affected when one sleeps too much or too long beyond the time required for one's rest.
The study, published in the journal European Heart, examined data from 116,000 people aged 35 to 70 years old from 21 different countries.
After an average follow-up period of about 8 years, researchers recorded 4381 deaths and 4365 cases of "cardiovascular disease".
People who slept more than eight hours risked death, heart disease or blood vessels in the brain, compared to those who slept 6 to 8 hours.
"Sleep is increasingly seen as an important lifestyle because it can affect cardiovascular disease and death," wrote the international team of researchers.
Compared to those who sleep six to eight hours, those who sleep eight to nine hours a day have an increased risk of 5%.
People who slept between nine and ten hours a day were at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death. Those who sleep more than 10 hours a day are 41% more likely to develop heart disease or die.
The researchers also found a 9% increase in the risk of infection in people sleeping a total of six hours or less, but this result was not statistically significant.
"Our study found that the optimal duration of sleep for adults was 6 to 8 hours a day," said lead researcher Chuangchi Wang, a PhD student from McMaster University and Peking Union Medical College. Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in China.
"The public should be able to sleep six to eight hours a day," said co-author, Salim Yusuf, of McMaster University, Ontario, Canada.
"On the other hand, if you sleep too much regularly, more than nine hours a day, it is necessary to consult your doctor to check your general health."
He explained that knowing the patient's number of nights sleep could be helpful to physicians, helping them identify people at higher risk for cardiovascular problems or premature death.
