The Africa Cup of Nations (CAF) 2019 will be announced on January 9, told AFP the president of the African Football Confederation (CAF), Ahmed Ahmed.
Ahmed pointed out that after the December 14th deadline, "things will be completed on December 25th to release a short list of candidates with a clear timetable and diction. The Executive Committee will meet on January 9 in Dakar (Senegal) where we will announce the decision. "The federation announced at the end of November that the tournament had been withdrawn from the host country, due to delays in the completion of stadium infrastructure and facilities and concerns related to the security situation, only seven months before the tournament scheduled for June and July.
Regarding the number of applications received by the Continental Union of the game, Ahmed replied: "According to my information, we received two or three letters to express our interest". Although the press indicates that Morocco and South Africa are the favorites to host the 2019 version, no country has yet announced official candidacy for the tournament, which will participate 24 teams instead of 16.
"I do not know, but there is South Africa that has sent a request for attention," Ahmed said. Two or three countries have requested specifications. "Ahmed did not want to confirm or deny Congo's progress in Brazzaville's candidacy file," his deputy Constan Omri Soleimani said on Friday, before denying Ugandan Minister of Sports Ug Ngondondela. "I do not want to talk about internal problems in a country. It is a Congolese internal problem. "You have to go back to the local union or the government," he said.
The continental union decided in 2014 under the former president of Cameroon, Issa Hayatou, awarded the 2019 version of Cameroon, 2021 to Côte d 'Ivoire and 2023 to Guinea. However, Ahmed revealed in statements to the network "Media TV" on Monday African that the 2021 tournament would be awarded to Cameroon instead of Ivory Coast, to host the last tournament 2023 instead of Guinea.
"We will postpone all the championships of the African nations (to the hosts) to give Cameroon an additional chance, more time, so that they can perform the required infrastructure work," Ahmed said. "In 2021, they will be ready: we will organize the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. In 2023, we organize the tournament in Ivory Coast. That was the decision of the Executive Committee of the African Confederation of at its meeting in Accra, capital of Ghana, on 30 November.
