A Chinese hospital diagnosed a man who was sniffing his gums every day after returning from work with pneumonia.
Pneumonia is a serious health problem and can turn into a deadly disease, according to a study published in Science Direct.
Peng, the 37-year-old man, was taken to a hospital in Changzhou, Fujian Province, in southeastern China, after complaining of coughs and chest pains .
During his interrogation, Peng told doctors that he was "addicted to sniffing the socks he was wearing," according to Chinese media reports.
As a result, the patient became infected with a fungal infection, which quickly touched his lungs, pulled him out of his pockets filled with odor-smelling germs.
The news has boosted social media in China and many users have said that they were used to the same thing and that they felt the danger of this habit for their health.
"If I feel guarabi, it is to know if I can wear it the next day," said one of them.
Another user said, "Maybe I should stop sniffing my neck after wearing it for a whole day." A third said, "I promise to wash my arms every day from now on."
Hechtag, "pneumonia caused by the inhalation of foul smelling socks", has been seen nearly 65 million times at China's Webo microblogging site.
