Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah has been named Africa Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row at the awards ceremony held in Dakar on Tuesday.

As in 2017, Salah beat his Senegalese teammate Sadio Manet and Gabon's Arsenal striker Pierre Emeric Obamyang. The 26-year-old Egyptian striker has been crowned the best player of the year by the BBC this year. He was crowned on Tuesday, the day his country was allowed to stage the 2019 Nations Africa Cup, Cameroon's successor, who withdrew from the tournament due to his lack of preparation, by going beyond South Africa. Salah became the fourth player to win this award twice in a row after Senegalese striker Alhaji Diouf, Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto's and Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure.

Morocco's Ashraf Hakimi won the Young African Player of the Year award while South African Cristina Thimbi Gatlana was voted best player.

Morocco won the 2018 trophy from the African National Football Association, while French coach Hervé Renard was named best coach. Nigeria won the best African women's trophy while Mauritania won the men's top men's trophy on the continent after qualifying for the 2019 African Nations for the first time in its history. South African women's coach Désiré Ellis has been named best coach.
