After an American man took a high dose of Viagra to stimulate erections, he suffered significant damage to the retina that might not be cured, according to a report from ophthalmologists who gave advice to the 50 year old man.
The France-Soir newspaper said that the man had significantly exceeded the prescribed dosage, which permanently damaged his vision.
This was attributed to the fact that the man took an overdose of sildenafil – the scientific name of Viagra – affected the retina.
The man, who did not give his name and lives in Mbadachusetts, said he drank a bottle containing 750 milligrams of drugs, while the recommended dose was only 50 milligrams.
The symptoms initially took the form of photophobia, that is, the inability to see light before it appeared in the field of vision described as a pie.The pediatrician badured him after consultation that the retina had the same lesions.
It is unclear whether the man regained his sight because he did not go to ophthalmology follow-up appointments, but this seems unlikely because there is no evidence known treatment to restore the retina to its original state.
According to the medical report of the case, this is not the first time that adverse reactions have been reported after excessive consumption of sildenafil, for unclear reasons as reported by the newspaper.
Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, confirmed that the change in color perception or lack of clarity of vision was a common side effect of this drug. However, when the instructions are followed and the dose is not exceeded, these symptoms are mild and disappear quickly.
