Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Los Angeles Galaxy forward, said he planned to treat each season separately after renewing his contract for a season.
Ibrahimovic, who joined the Galaxy in March after leaving Manchester United, had a great first season in America and was named tournament MVP.
The 37-year-old was bound to return to his former Milan club last year, but decided to stay with Galaxy to try to reach the playoffs.
"I may have been able to sign for two, three or four years," he told reporters. But I said each year separately.
"Right now, I think I can do a lot for the club." I do not want to put the club in a position where my level is low and I'm in the team, especially under strict rules in the tournament."
"I said, let's think each year separately." If I were in good shape, I would stay and perform well and the club would not have to be involved and I was in bad shape and within the limits of the current budget. "
Ibrahimovic scored 22 goals and 10 goals in 27 games last season.
However, the Galaxy has not managed to reach the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Ibrahimovic, winner of the titles in the Netherlands, Spain, France and Italy, said the result was disappointing.
He said: "We have not reached the exclusive roles. For me, it's new and catastrophic."
