The discovery of a major protein in the production of insulin

Researchers from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark have discovered the protein responsible for producing insulin.

During the study, published in the January 25 Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, researchers found that the proinsulin hormone produced in the pancreas needed a protein called GRP94 to convert to insulin.

The researchers eliminated or inhibited the GRP94 protein in a sample of experimental mice to see what had happened with proléinsinol and found that beta cells did not secrete a sufficient amount of insulin.

"We hope this new discovery will help us develop new drugs to prevent overproduction of insulin, such as in children and adults with hyperinsulin, and in the long run, we hope," said Mikael Tomasz Marezik, principal investigator of the study. We can also increase insulin production, reduce the burden of beta-cell production compared to type 2 diabetes and maintain its secretory function longer without the need for insulin injections.
