PARIS (Reuters) – The vaccine against the human papillomavirus is "safe and indispensable" to eradicate cancer, French health authorities said Monday, condemning "unfounded rumors" about the damage and serious side effects of vaccines.
This prevents the elimination of cervical cancer, which kills more than 300,000 women a year.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Paris confirmed in a statement the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine. The papillomavirus, which spreads primarily through badual intercourse, causes cervical cancer, which threatens a woman's life every two minutes, the fourth most deadly type of cancer in women.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) last year, more than half a million new cervical cancers have been diagnosed worldwide.
If prevention is not promoted, especially through the vaccine, the virus could threaten the lives of 460,000 women annually by 2040, the source added.
