(Reuters) – Manchester United announced Friday that its defender Phil Jones would be extended to Old Trafford until 2023.

Jones, the English player, became the last player to extend his stay with United after striker Anthony Marciel and midfielder Scott McCumtainay after signing new deals last month with interim coach Uli Junar Solchar.

United had the opportunity to extend Jones' contract for another year.

"I am happy to sign a new contract," he said on the United website. "Manchester United is an important part of my life after eight years in the team and I love everything about this club."

"I am excited by the challenges and we are ready for a busy season and I would like to thank Olli and the coaching staff for their continued support of development," added the Blackburn Rovers.

Jones played 208 games with United in all competitions during a rally during which he was injured.

"Phil knows what it takes from a Manchester United player who has already won the Premier League, the Copa del Rey and the European Championships," Solchar said.

"He will celebrate his 27 years and will reach the top as the heart of the defense and we are happy that he has linked his future to this club."
