Many use their bodies to express their ideas to others. But thanks to new developments, tattoos can become a medical indicator of blood sugar.
Experts recommend unconventional medical tattooing – electronically or using microbial ink or human cells. But now, a team of biochemists is proposing a way to turn the tattoo of the human body into a sensor system to monitor important health indicators of the body.
The proposed method is based on a chromatogram (physical method of chemical badysis), based on the determination of the concentration of the material according to the color of the solution. According to scientists, a person with chronic illness paints a fixed shampoo that changes color by changing the level of specific substances in the blood metabolism. As the color changes, the patient and doctor will know if their condition has improved or worsened.
The researchers tested this method on pork skin by injecting it in different colors – methyl red, bromothemol blue (belonging to triphenylmethane pigments) and phthalene phenol. These colors are indicators of the acidity and alkalinity of organic matter, which changes color by changing acidity. The scientific team based on the results of these tests has created a yellow color indicator. The first becomes dark green when the blood glucose level increases and the second tends to become greener when the albumin protein level changes in the blood.

The doctors point out that these two indicators are important for monitoring the health status of a patient. A high blood glucose level requires treatment and the change in albumin protein level refers to liver or kidney failure. To facilitate the "reading", tattoo experts have developed a special application for smartphone, in which the person who directs the lens of the smartphone camera and the program will badyze the color of the image and decide on the change.
This method of monitoring the health status of patients is simple and inexpensive, but before using it, the scientific team must first prove its effectiveness during testing clinics on the human.
