FIFA has increased the number of women's teams from 24 to 32 from the next edition in 2023 to "promote the development of women's football".

The FIFA Board of Directors unanimously approved the proposal to increase the number of teams after taking its decision at its next meeting on 23 and 24 October in Shanghai.

One of those five points is the increase in the number of women participating in the World Cup from 24 to 32 from 2023, as was done at the World Cup, men's 32 to 48 elected from 2026.

Nine candidates are competing for the 2023 World Cup: Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Japan, South Korea (possibly with a joint organization with North Korea) and New Zealand.
