Retail sales in the euro area rose 1.1% in June from a month earlier, Eurostat, the European Union's statistics institute, said Friday that consumers could help support the weakness of the economy.
Retail sales in the 19 eurozone countries outpaced economists' estimates, which were expecting an average 0.2% increase in sales from May.
Eurostat data showed that retail trade benefited from fuel expenditure support for cars, food and beverages and a sharp increase in sales of clothing and footwear, offsetting and drop sales by 0.6% in May.
In a separate statement, Eurostat said delivery prices in factories had dropped in June compared to May, highlighting the weakness of inflation in the region.
Industrial producer prices fell by 0.6% in the euro area, a fourth consecutive monthly decline. The decline was above market expectations, which declined 0.3% on a monthly basis.
