Lebanon won a valuable victory and beat Syria 2-1 away from the Group A competition at the West Asian Football Championship in Karbala.

Nader Matar (81), Hbadan Shaito (Moni) 90 (Lebanon) and Ahmed Al-Doni (47) scored the first match of Syria.

The Lebanese team lost its first game against the Iraqi team with a goal.

At Karbala Stadium, the Lebanese team started the match forcefully, exerting pressure early in successive attempts. It prevented Syrian goalkeeper Ibrahim Alama from facing one of those attempts in the sixth minute, when he turned to the Hbadan Saad ball that was heading for the goal.

The first half was witness to no Syrian attempt, with the exception of Mohammed Al-Marmour who went abroad (42). Hbadan Maatouq responded with a powerful shot that had a Syrian goalkeeper on the field.

Unlike the first half, the Syrian team started the second period in strength and opened the scoring early by Ahmed Al-Doni when he received a pbad deep in front of the Lebanese goal completed directly by the net Mahdi Khalil (47).

The Lebanese team suffered a delay and returned to their defensive zone against the Syrian team. Mardik Mardikian nearly added the second goal by putting a ball that fell behind the defenders who had sent him on the advanced Lebanese goalkeeper, but the ball went abroad.

Ten minutes before the end of the match, the Lebanese team stood up and managed to get back into the atmosphere of the match and to modify the result of Nader Matar from a ball in which he gathered all his forces and surprised the Syrians (81).

The Lebanese continued their attacks and Hbadan Shaito "Moni" managed to settle the match with a second goal.

"We paid the price for our mistakes and put in the right place," coach Fajr Ibrahim said after the match.
