Forbes magazine named tennis star Serena Williams as the best-paid athlete in the world in 2019, according to the annual ranking released on Tuesday.
Serena, who won 23 major titles, earned $ 29.2 million in the 12-month period ending June 1, including prizes of $ 4.2 million.
Naomi Osaka, who was in the limelight in 2018 when she defeated Serena in the Flushing Meadows final, was second with $ 24.3 million and the third-seeded German with $ 11.8 million against Simona Halep of Romania in fourth place at Wimbledon last month.
Forbes based its study on financial rewards, salaries, sponsorship companies and marketing contracts between June 1, 2018 and January 1, 2019.
Apart from tennis, the athlete with the highest income was Alex Morgan, with 5.8 million and 12th.
