The proximity of the planet (WASP-121b) with its star made it look like American football
Scientists spotted the distinctive WASP-121b planet at 900 light-years, giving it a short distance to the shape of its host, which is closer to American football.
According to the journal Astronomical Scientific, the proximity of the planet WASP-121b to the star has leaked gases and minerals to transform over time and get closer to the shape of the oval.
WASP-121b is about the size of Jupiter and gas leaks from a planet of this size are a rare phenomenon, according to David Singh of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
The planet's high temperature of 4,600 degrees Fahrenheit caused gas and minerals such as magnesium and iron to leak into the upper atmosphere, Singh was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
Scientists have spotted hot gases on other planets, but only in the lower atmosphere, said Singh, the first time they saw them at this altitude.
Scientists badyzed the data collected by the Hubble telescope and observed the impact of the star's ultraviolet radiation on the WASP-121b planet, as well as the rise of fugitive gases on the planet.
The gas leaks seem to be within the limits of the gravity of the planet, reported the Daily Mail.
