"I decided to stop playing professional football," said the former player at Atletico Madrid and Manchester United during a televised interview.
"I was suggested to keep playing, I apologized, but I'm no longer competitive and it's a bit difficult," said the player, who ended his career in Kitche in Hong Kong and announced his international retirement in 2015.
