"Samsung" and "LG" in the top ten of the patent

A new report revealed Monday that Samsung Electronics and South Korean LG Electronics were among the top 10 US patents.

Samsung Electronics remained in second place for the 12th consecutive year, while LG Electronics is ranked in the top ten for the third year in a row.

Samsung Electronics ranks second behind IBM in terms of the number of patents filed in the US last year, according to a report released Monday by the American Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO).

Last year, Samsung Electronics registered 5,836 patents in the United States, ranking second behind the US technology giant IBM, which received 9,088 patents.

LG Electronics came seventh with 2,473 patents.

Other South Korean companies include Samsung Display (17th), Hyundai Motor (22nd), SK Hynix (45th), LG Display (53rd) and LG Chem (61st). And LG Innotec (87th), among the 100 largest US patent companies.

By country, six American companies, two South Korean companies, a Japanese company and a Taiwanese company figure in the top ten.
