Liverpool goaltender Andy Lonergan has officially signed a free transfer.

Although the summer transfer market in England ended Thursday, clubs have the right to sign players who do not have a contract with a club.

The 35-year-old will sign a short-term contract with the club, announced the Reds in his official statement posted on his website.

Lonergan's contract replaces Alison Becker, whose manager, Juergen Klopp, has been away for several weeks due to an injury, which means he'll miss the next European Super League match against Chelsea.

The club said in a statement that Lounergan would be on the shores of the European Super Cup on Wednesday, replacing Adrian, who would replace Simon Meniolet, who has joined Belgian club Brugge.

Lonergan is not a new face for the champions of Europe, the player has been called to take part in the preparations for the new season, due to Allison's permission after the Copa America and to the injury of more than a young guardian.

The 35-year-old began his career at Preston and played in several clubs including Leeds United, Wolverhampton, Bolton, Fulham and Middlesbrough.

Jürgen Klopp expects Andy Lonergan to join #LFC in the short term as a result of Alisson Becker's calf injury.
