(Reuters) – Former world No. 1 Venus Williams pbaded the first round of the Cincinnati Open after beating compatriot Lauren Davis on Monday.
Venus won 7-5 6-2 to maintain her perfect record against Davis as she never lost a group and beat her four times.
Venus saved seven of the eight breaks in the game and won 61% of Davis' second points.
Earlier, Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva and Aleksandra Sasnovich of Belarus qualified for the second round after winning two of the three sets.
Putintseva beat Latina Elena Ostapenko 6-2 6-7 6-3 while Sasnovic beat the Australian Astra Sharma 6-1 4-6 6-1.
Elise Mertens beat Katy McNally 7-5, 6-0 and Maria Sakari defeated Camilla Giorgi 6-3, 6-0.
Arena Sabalinka defeated Petra Martic 6-1, 6-4.
