The Portuguese Socialist government ordered tank truck drivers to "return to work" on the first day of an indefinite strike threatening to plunge the country into a fuel crisis at the height of the summer holidays.
"There was no other solution," said government spokesman Thiago Antonis, after a meeting of the emergency cabinet.
The order came after the government declared "the state of emergency energy," after the service stations began to deplete their stocks, while the police escorted tanks fuel loaded with additional supplies. About 500 members of the security forces were deployed to drive tanks instead of hitting drivers.
The Portuguese Prime Minister said earlier that "his government will not hesitate to call the striking drivers if the minimum requirements for emergency services and priority sectors are not met".
