Jose Luis Brown, who scored the first goal of Argentina in the 1986 World Cup final against West Germany, died at the age of 62, local media reported.

The Argentine Football Federation confirmed the death of the former defender in a tweet, while former Argentine striker Gabriel Batistuta was crying on his Twitter account.

Brown has spent most of his career as an Estudiantes player and has played nearly 300 league games with the Argentine club.

At the end of the 1985-1986 season, Deportivo Espanyol ended his contract because of a serious knee injury, but he nevertheless joined the Argentinian team of the World Cup in Mexico as a replacement for the defender Daniel Basaria.

After Basaria was expelled from Argentina because of illness, Brown joined Diego Maradona's starter squad.

Brown, who played 36 times for Argentina, scored his only international goal in the final, giving Argentina a header in the 23rd minute before his country finally won 3-2.

Later in the game when Argentina scored only one goal, Brown was dislocated on the shoulder during a showdown with Norbert Eder, but refused to leave the field and continued to play despite the pain of winning the second Argentine World Cup title.
