Toronto Raptor dealer Kyle Lowry is joining the list of absentees from the United States as he prepares to defend his World Cup title from Aug. 31 to Sept. 15.
Lowry, crowned champion last season, confirmed his absence due to a left thumb injury, surgery in July and recovery.
"I was hoping to get back in time for the tournament, but the doctors did not give me the go-ahead for a final return to the stadiums," he wrote on his Instagram page.
"I like playing with the American team, but I have to refrain from participating and encourage her to come from my home."
The absence of Lowry adds to a long list of NBA stars who have decided not to be part of the Gregg Popovic team, after the "King" LeBron James announced in April that he could not join the team, with many other names such as James Harden, Anthony Davis and Kwahi Lenard who preferred to prepare for the new league season with their teams wearing the jersey by team.
Boston Celtics playmaker Marcus Smart is still skeptical after missing a contraction in his calf at the Las Vegas Friday game.

The United States will resume training in California this week and will play a friendly against Spain in Anaheim on Friday.

The team will then travel to Australia, where they will play two friendlies against the host country and Canada, in preparation for the World Cup, in the ambitious pursuit of their third consecutive title for an unprecedented feat, where they will play in group E with Turkey, the Czech Republic and Japan.
