Researchers at the University of Surrey have developed a new artificial intelligence system that can predict the symptoms of cancer patients and the difficulty of treating them during their treatment journey, allowing doctors to start treating these symptoms at an early stage.
In the first study of its kind, members of the research team explained that they had designed two artificial intelligence systems capable of accurately predicting three common symptoms in cancer patients: depression, tensions and sleep disorders.
These three symptoms are badociated with a marked deterioration in the quality of life of the cancer patient. During this study, the team badyzed the data already available on the symptoms of the cancer patient in the radiotherapy phase.
The team relied on data covering different time scales to determine whether the algorithms on which the artificial intelligence system is based can actually predict the onset of these symptoms or whether they will emerge from the baseline .
The study, conducted in collaboration with the University of Surrey and California in San Francisco, showed that the results of the artificial intelligence system were very close to the actual symptoms that occurred in patients.
"These exciting results show that artificial intelligence techniques have a real impact on people with cancer," said Bayan Barnaji, an artificial intelligence specialist from the University of Surrey.
"It can help doctors identify the patients most likely to develop symptoms, and help them develop proactive treatment plans to treat and overcome these symptoms," he said.
