A team of scientists has identified the vulnerability of cells infected with HIV, which paves the way for eradication.
Researchers at the Institut Pasteur in Paris said they managed to destroy the cells infected with the virus, which is usually treated with antiretrovirals, the Daily Mail reported.
AIDS patients take these antibiotics all their lives because they fail to eliminate concentrated virus stocks in immune cells.
"Currently used antiretroviral therapy is designed to prevent AIDS infection, but it is unable to eradicate the virus in the body," said a spokesman quoted by the institute.
"The virus keeps its stocks in places such as lymphocytes, which are the main target of the virus," he said.
