International striker Taha Ybadin Al-Khneisi led Tunisia's Esperance to a 2-0 win over group B in the second group of the African Champions League (ACL) against Platinum Zimbabwe 2-0.
At Menzah Stadium in Tunis and in the absence of the mbades due to a penalty from the African Union, Al-Khaneisi scored both goals in 25 and 66 minutes and led the team. Hope for a first victory in the campaign to defend his title.
The African Union announced Monday that Esperance would be penalized for two unopposed matches because of riots in the final leg of the final against Al Ahly at Rades Stadium last year, where they have won the title and returned to continental football for the first time in seven years.
Esperance has not reflected its continental success with a positive result at the FIFA Club World Cup, with only fifth place, but looks forward to coming back later this year, culminating in the Continental title for the fourth time in its history after 1994 and 2011. Esperance, which began its 100th anniversary celebrations last Tuesday, managed to win its first win of the season after being eliminated in the first round. She escaped the defeat of the first round of the group stage against Horoya Conakry (1-1) International Anis Badri in stoppage time.
Esperance was second in Group B with four points, three points behind former South African champions Orlando Pirates and Horoya, who meet later in Johannesburg, while Platinum slipped to last place with a point.
Esperance took the lead from the start and managed to turn his control into first goal thanks to Al-Khunaisi, who took advantage of a superb effort from Al-Badri and pulled out bearing in the left corner of the Zimbabwean keeper Petros Mahari.
Al-Khunaisi extended the lead in the middle of the second half taking advantage of a header from Cameroon striker Franck Com after the absence of the first match due to suspension, ahead the goal after a corner shot by Algerian Youssef Blaili and to the right of goalkeeper Mahari, 65 years old.
The Ismaili Egyptians are also on the table with the African Club of Tunisia in Group C, Al-Saoura of Algeria with Al-Ahli of Egypt and Saif of the last two editions of Group D.
The second round ends Saturday with African champions ASEC Mimosa, Nigerian Lobi Stars, South Africans Mamelodi Sundowns, Wydad Casablanca (Group A), Congo Democratic Club FC with Simba Tanzanians (Group D) and the Congolese Sports Club.
